SOI YAKSA TREK

Soi Yaksa Trek
Jomolhari Base Camp

The most popular trek in Bhutan can be completed in 8 nights and 9 days. The altitude ranges from 2,500m to nearly 5,000m (lowest and highest points on the route). Trekkers can expect a wide variety of flora and fauna. The highlight of the trek is the picturesque view of Mount Jomolhari from the Jomolhari Base Camp, Jangothang.

DAY 1: Arrival at Paro Airport.

DAY 2: Early breakfast, then drive to Taktsang parking and hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery.

DAY 3: (START OF TREK)
From Paro to Shana to Thangthangkha

Distance: 22 km, Duration: 6-8 hours depending on trail conditions, 770m ascent, 10m descent, Camp Altitude: 3,610m

The trail follows the river through a heavily forested area with a few isolated farmhouses. As you ascend, the valley becomes narrower, wilder, and steeper. The trail winds up and down along the drainage until you arrive at Singkarap, where you can see one house at 3,059m. You will cross several traditional wooden bridges before reaching Thangthangka. The camp is in a meadow with a stone shelter. If the weather permits, you can see Mount Jomolhari for the first time. (3594m campsite)

DAY 4: From Soe Thangthangka to Jomolhari Campsite (Jangothang)

Distance: 19 km, Duration: 5-6 hours, 480m ascent, Camp Altitude: 4,080m

If you didn't see Mt. Jomolhari the previous evening, you will have another chance this morning. The trek continues up the Paro Chhu, passing through alpine meadows and sparse forests. You will cross an army checkpoint and enjoy spectacular views of high mountain ridges and snow-capped peaks. Yaks and their herders' homes become a regular feature of the landscape. Passing the villages of Soe, Takethang, and Dangochang is another highlight of the day. After reaching Jangothang, one of the most beautiful campsites in the Himalayas, you will again enjoy a spectacular view of Mount Jomolhari.

DAY 5: Halt at Jangothang.

DAY 6: From Jangothang to Dhumzo Chhu (via Bonte La)

Distance: 16 km, Walking Time: 6-7 hours, 810m ascent, 1,090m descent, Camp Altitude: 3,800m

The trail descends to the Paro Chhu and climbs steeply to Bonte La Pass at 4,890m, the highest point of the trek. You will trek downstream to Dhumzo, passing a few houses. Bonte La is the highest pass on this trek, so it is important to start early. The weather in the mountains is usually most stable in the morning, increasing the chances of spectacular views. Bonte La (4,890m) is marked with cairns and prayer flags. Take time to enjoy the scenery or put up some prayer flags. Your campsite at Soi Yaksa Valley is a beautiful site with impressive rock cliffs, waterfalls, deep side valleys, and snow-covered peaks.

DAY 7: From Thombu via Takhung La Pass

Distance: 11 km, Duration: 4-5 hours, 720m ascent, 340m descent, Camp Altitude: 4,180m

The trail climbs 100m over a ridge, then drops to another stream. After crossing Takhung La Pass at 4,520m, you will descend to Thombu Shong, where your campsite is next to three yak herder huts.

DAY 8: (END OF TREK)
From Thombu to Gunitsawa and then drive to Paro

Distance: 13 km, Duration: 4-5 hours, 200m ascent, 1,650m descent, Camp Altitude: 2,850m

Crossing Thombu La Pass at 4,380m, you will finally reach Gunitsawa. From there, you will be picked up by a driver and driven to Paro Village Lodge, a 45-minute drive.
